When I started writing the first book in the Summoned Series back in 2013, I created a character only referred to as Mistress. She delivered the heroine of Summoned and Sold to her fate and then vanished from the story. I thought that would be the last time I heard from her, but I was wrong. That small appearance led to another one in Summoned and Stolen, and Mistress kept whispering to me that she had a name and a tale of her own. Summoned and Bound is her story.

When I start writing a book, I rarely have more than a few roughed out details and a brief biography of my main characters. The story and the characters evolve as I write, which means that I can be as surprised as anyone else when the plot takes an unexpected twist, or a minor character steps out of the ranks and takes on a life of their own. That’s what happened with Mistress. She evolved from a nameless minion into a woman named Gwyneth Annaren.

That sort of sorcery doesn’t happen every time I write. Not all my secondary characters come to life the way Gwyneth did, demanding that I tell their story and share it with the world. Writing is creativity, perseverance and a dash of craziness all mixed in together, but sometimes, there’s a spark of magic thrown in there, too. Those are the moments when characters are born, and stories take on a life of their own.

I love those moments.

Susan lives out on the Canadian west coast surrounded by open water, dear family and good friends. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidently swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. 

If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too damned short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.
